Counting calories tells half the story

The same calorie behaves very differently depending on your hormones, timing and sleep. Whether a meal goes to fat storage or becomes fuel is driven less by calories than by hormones. Lumora models exactly that — and makes it visible.

You describe, the model builds

You enter age, height, weight, activity level and your sleep/wake times, then log your meals. This sets the model's initial state — basal metabolism, circadian rhythm, energy stores. Each meal enters the system as an input with its carbohydrate / protein / fat macros.

Watch your hormones in real time

The engine integrates glucose, insulin, ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, glycogen and fat flux across the day in ~3-minute steps, using coupled differential equations. You see the hormone rhythm rise and fall in real time, and exactly which meal spikes insulin.

03 · Fat burning & energy

See exactly when you switch to fat

You see, gram by gram, exactly when your body switches to burning fat. The Krebs (energy) cycle shows how fuel becomes ATP; as glycogen depletes you watch the shift toward ketosis. A "fat burned today" counter tells you at a glance whether it is decreasing or increasing.

Log a meal, see its hormonal impact

You add a meal and instantly see its hormonal impact. It tracks estimated body fat, muscle and weight over time; when you log a weigh-in, it shows the deviation from the simulation. A step counter (pedometer) measures your movement to make the daily burn more accurate, and offers personalized fasting and meal-timing insight.

The math behind these numbers

At its core, Lumora is a physiological simulation engine: a system of coupled differential equations solved forward through the day. The schematic below shows the whole flow from meal to ATP — the exact coefficients, response curves and coupling terms are proprietary and not disclosed.

Nutrients from meals, glycogen and fat stores enter the blood; hormones regulate this flux. Glucose becomes pyruvate via glycolysis, then Acetyl-CoA. Fatty acids reach Acetyl-CoA through β-oxidation, and ketone bodies step in as an alternative fuel. Acetyl-CoA enters the Krebs cycle; the NADH and FADH₂ produced are passed to the electron transport chain and generate ATP.

Glucose, insulin, ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, melatonin, adrenaline and ketones evolve together, each influencing the others — not a single formula but a mutually-coupled system.

Compartmental energy stores

Liver glycogen (~100g), muscle glycogen (~400g), fat and lean mass are modeled as separate compartments that fill and drain through real flows.

Substrate partitioning

At each step the model computes how much energy comes from carbohydrate, fat, ketone and protein — a fuel mix in the spirit of the respiratory quotient.

The system is integrated forward in ~3-minute steps across 24 hours; depot states carry over realistically from one day to the next.

Circadian modulation
